Sacramento Soundtrack

Wherever I go people are always asking me for one thing: More songs about Sacramento. I mean, sure, people also like songs about lesser cities like New York, Chicago, Paris and LA, but mostly people like songs about Sacramento. And if there’s one thing I like to do it’s giving the people what they want.

So I’ve scoured the internets to find the finest Sacramento songs available.

1. Sacramento by Middle of the Road

Clearly, these people are not in Sacramento. They seem to be in Amsterdam…or “the Sacramento of Western Europe” as it is commonly referred to. I might nto be sure where they are, but I have no doubts about their love for Sacramento. The lyrics make reference to some things that – as the Director of Tourism for Sacramento – I have no clue what they’re talking about (e.g. “the Indian spring of Sacramento”). Still, there has never been a more complimentary song written about our fair city. If anybody knows this band and if they still exist, let them know they have free drinks waiting for them in Sacramento whenever they want. I have no doubts that the guy in the Mickey Mouse shirt who is playing a buoy like a drum would appreciate a free beer.

2. Automobile – Kaleo

People in Iceland know Sacramento and I’m taking 100% credit for that because I went there once and petted ponies, drank Black Death and gagged on fermented shark or whatever the heck it was. Anyhow, this song isn’t really about Sacramento, but we do get a nice shout-out for being sunny on their road trip to Mexico…and that’s nice. Kaleo is also welcome to swing by Sacramento for a free beer, but only if they bring Björk.

3. California Love – 2pac

Again, this isn’t really a song about Sacramento, but we do get another nice mention when Mr. Pac mentions going from “Oakland to Sactown, the Bay Area and back down.” And if any city anywhere puts the “mack down” it’s Sacramento.

4. Luisa – Michaela Anne

This is one is definitely a true Sacramento song. Sounds like she (possibly singing as a male character) is down on her luck and just wants to hitchhike back home to Sacramento. We’ve all been there. We’d prefer that you rented a car or booked a vacation as part of a group tour, but get here any way you can. Like, it would really mean a lot to me if you did.

5. Sacramento – Be Brave Bold Robot

Long-time local favorites Be Brave Bold Robot wrote this sweet lil ode to Sacramento a few years back. Not sure why this isn’t our official city song. Maybe it will be soon. Do cities have official songs? Well, they should.

6. Sacramento – Hoagy Carmichael

Taking it way back for this one. There’s a lot to like here. I mean, first off “Hoagy Carmichael” is one of the all-time great names. Plus, it has more connections to our area because Sacramento has a suburb named Carmichael and I eat hoagies like 5 times a week. Hoagy himself certainly had more popular songs, but he never had a better topic. Mostly what I like about this song is the last second when the singers just rapidly yell “Sacramento!” and a quick burst of horns wraps the whole thing up. I’d like to use that as a tag on all official Visit Sacramento videos, but I’m assuming zero other people in the office will support that idea. Let me ask around real quick…..yup, zero.

Ok, I think that’s it for now. As you can tell, Sacramento’s musical history is pretty hard to compete with. I challenge you to name one song about New York that’s more famous than any of these sweet Sacramento jams.

If you know of other Sacramento songs, please send them my way at Thanks!
